The health and safety of our employees and contractors is our number one priority. Taking a whole day to focus on health and safety is a strong symbol of this commitment, but above and beyond this particular day, it’s important for us to be vigilant every day on an ongoing basis to reach our Journey to Zero accidents. I am convinced we can do it. Because ultimately our goal must be for everyone to be able to go home safe and sound after a day’s work

Alex Nick, Head of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg

For in its ninth year, this day is one of the most important events for the company, where health and safety in the workplace remains the number one priority.

Activities were organised during the day under the theme of “Stop, think and act safely” to ensure that each and every individual is responsible of their own safety, health and well-being as well as for their colleagues. This concept of shared vigilance is key to see continued improvement in the company’s Safety results.

This year, these activities focused on the theme “Together for safety” which emphasises the importance of every employee working together to reach the ultimate goal of zero fatalities and zero long time injury hours. The goal is to reach and involve not just “me”, as a separate individual, but “us” - employees at all organisational levels as well as staff representatives, contractors and providers.

Health and safety issues were addressed in different ways during the day by the ArcelorMittal sites in Luxembourg. The industrial sites of Belval, Differdange, Bissen, Bettembourg, Dudelange and Rodange, offered various theoretical and practical workshops providing training in emergency calls, the handling of extinguishers, use of PPE (personal protection equipment), lifting of loads, identification and analysis of land risks (circulation of machinery and interaction with pedestrians, analysis of accidents and emergency procedures) and even respect for the environment practices (selective sorting, energy efficiency, protection of biodiversity).

At the research and development centre in Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg-city headquarters, employees were taught first aid, ergonomics, sophrology, and stretching at the office.

This day was a perfect opportunity to discuss and share ideas and learn from one another.

In 2014, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg improved its frequency rate for accidents with lost time injury with a rate of 1.36 vs 2.14 in 2013. These results came from implemented targeted measures and a strong will for progress.

Alex Nick, Head of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg, explained: “The health and safety of our employees and contractors is our number one priority. Taking a whole day to focus on health and safety is a strong symbol of this commitment, but above and beyond this particular day, it’s important for us to be vigilant every day on an ongoing basis to reach our Journey to Zero accidents. I am convinced we can do it. Because ultimately our goal must be for everyone to be able to go home safe and sound after a day’s work”.
