This year’s edition confirms the growing role of institutional investors in Europe and the importance of the investment fund business

Dariush Yazdani, partner at PwC Luxembourg

PwC Luxembourg has just published the latest edition of its annual European Institutional Investor Poster. This third edition allows a quick, yet comprehensive overview of the European institutional market including the size and structure of the market, the asset allocation breakdown, the top locations and the largest investors. The poster also highlights the country origins and destinations of European portfolio investments outside Europe.

Commenting on the 2013 poster, Dariush Yazdani, partner at PwC Luxembourg said: “this year’s edition confirms the growing role of institutional investors in Europe and the importance of the investment fund business”.

The European asset management market reached approximately 14.7tn euros at end September 2012 of which nearly 60% of assets are held into investment funds (i.e. UCITS and non-UCITS funds). Institutional investors now account for 69% of those assets compared to 66% two years ago.

The firm’s latest figures show that the institutional assets in the top 15 locations in Europe increased by 6% over last year’s edition. Top locations of institutional investors remain the UK, followed by France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

In the aftermath of the financial crisis, European investors have reduced their portfolio investments outside Europe by 4%, especially in SAAAME  countries (-8%) which now account for 25% of European portfolio investments outside Europe. 44% of those portfolio investments outside Europe are made through the UK and Luxembourg (27% and 17% respectively).
