ING News: Less than one quarter of Luxembourg residents heard about the sharing economy, against one third at European level!
In its last study, ING International Survey focused on the sharing economy, that is on sharing underused goods and services against payment
Like most Europeans, Luxembourgers do not know well the notion of sharing economy: only 24% have heard about it, against 32% at European level. On that question, differences are huge between the countries of the survey. Indeed, less than 20% of Austrians have heard about the sharing economy, against more than 50% for the Turks.
As far as the typical profile of sharers is concerned, it is made of young people (aged less than 35 years), highly qualified and living in cities.
The reasons mentioned the most to take part in it are environmental (55%), financial (54%), helping to build communities (43%) and additional revenue generation (39%).
Even if only a few residents currently participate in it (8,9% shared their holiday accommodation, 4,2% their car and 2,8% their sports equipment), many consider doing it (33% for their household appliances, 32% for their bikes and 31% for their sports equipment) during the next 12 months.
And 20% of the Luxembourg residents surveyed think that their participation in the sharing economy will rise in the 12 coming months, which is a good figure but lower than the European average of 32%.
This is particularly the case for the 25-34 year age category (25% for the Grand-Duchy against 41% for the European average).
However, some factors have a considerable impact on the willingness to take part in the sharing economy like the reluctance to see other people using one’s property (which influences 58% of respondents in the Grand-Duchy and 56% at European level), insurance questions (important for 58% of people surveyed in the Grand-Duchy and 53% at European level) or the quality of shared items (influencing 46% of the respondents in the Grand-Duchy and 45% at European level).
